Who We Are
The Murray Plains Meat Cooperative is a farmer owned organisation established in 2019 by a group of farmers in the Barham region to address the lack of livestock processing options in the Central Murray district. The cooperative will run the multi species Barham micro-abattoir which was finished being built with government funding in 2023. The cooperative aims to provide the services of livestock processing, butchering, distribution and marketing support for small scale paddock to plate farmers and also for small home kills and local butchers. The minimum shareholder fee to become a member of the Murray Plains Meat Cooperative is $1500, and the minimum required number of animals processed per year per member is 5.
Community Investment
Connect with local farmers to strengthen our economy, community and food sovereignty
Currently farmers have to travel up to 600km to process animals such as pigs and chickens, with no options for organic processing, and there are increasingly becoming less space and availability for beef, lamb and goat processing options. As abattoirs become larger, small scale producers have been pushed out leaving no options for their animals to be processed. The Barham micro-abattoir is a multi-species processing facility. This model is the solution for our region and Australia, and you have an opportunity to be a part of the solution. You can help the local food system by investing in our communities future.
